WHAT IS IT
Power breathing has many benefits for both athletes and non-athletes. A regular program of deep, mindful breathing has been shown to improve general health, reduce stress and increase energy.
When you breathe purposefully and mindfully, you increase the capacity of your lungs and improve your circulation. Many people find that this in turn reduces stress and anxiety, increases stamina, reduces fatigue, and improves their overall fitness.
Many traditional practices, including yoga and martial arts, incorporate breathing as part of their overall training regimen as both a way to channel internal energy (ki or chi) and to deepend the mind-body connection. Deep, mindful breathing has long been recognized as a restoratative practice by both East and West.
Benefits for Athletes
Power Breathing isn't just a way to relieve stress. When practiced by trained athletes, it can be a rigorous way to increase lung capacity and strengthen the core muscles of the torso. The more strenuous Power Breathing methods engage the muscles of the upper, mid and lower abdomen in a way that is as intense as doing sit-ups or crunches. Holding and condensing the breath requires a concentrated and coordinated effort by all of the core muscle groups. Regular Power Breathing practice can strengthen your mind-body connection and improve your strength and stamina, leading to improved performance in your chosen sport.
